Nexo vs Coinbase, Kraken, Aave, and Ledn: US platform comparison (2026)

By Nexo Team•8 min read

The short answer:

For US crypto holders, Nexo combines yield solutions, a revolving crypto Credit Line from 0.9% per year, a crypto exchange and private client services for portfolios of $100,000 or more in one account.

Coinbase and Kraken are exchanges first, with strong trading tools. Aave is a non-custodial DeFi protocol for users who manage their own wallets. Ledn focuses on fixed-term Bitcoin loans. The right choice depends on whether you want to accrue interest, trade, borrow, or all three.

Many US crypto holders use several platforms: an exchange for trading, a lender for liquidity, and a DeFi protocol for yield. Each comes with its own fees, limits, and account rules. Below, we compare five platforms across four areas: yield, trading, credit lines, and private client services.

Data checked October 2026. Terms, rates, and access depend on your state of residence, tier, and asset.

Yield: Generating interest on your crypto

Platforms generate yield in different ways: centralized yield products, proof-of-stake staking rewards, and DeFi liquidity pools.

  • Nexo: Choose Flexible Yield, with interest paid out daily and no lock-up, or Fixed-term Yield for terms of one, three, six, or 12 months. Flexible Yield goes up to 14% annual interest and Fixed-term Yield up to 16%. Interest paid in the same asset compounds daily. Your rate depends on your Wealth Club tier, and no paid subscription is required. A portfolio balance of at least $5,000 is needed to earn interest.
  • Coinbase: Offers USDC rewards (yielding ~5% APY) and staking rewards for proof-of-stake assets in eligible US states, minus Coinbase's commission. Staking of new principal is prohibited in California, Maryland, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, while higher reward tiers and fee breaks are available with a paid Coinbase One membership.
  • Kraken: Provides onchain staking for supported assets across select US states, Babylon protocol Bitcoin staking, and automated stablecoin holding rewards on assets like USDC and USDG. Note that pooled retail staking was phased out following regulatory settlements, and certain opt-in rewards require accredited investor status.
  • Aave (v3): Supply rates adjust dynamically with borrowing utilization in each pool. You maintain full custody of your private keys and interact directly with smart contracts, but you must pay native network gas fees for every deposit and withdrawal.
  • Ledn: Offers yield on stablecoins only via ring-fenced Growth Accounts earning up to 6% APY; interest accounts for BTC and ETH have been discontinued.

Trading: Execution and fees

  • Nexo: Buy, sell, and swap digital assets on the Nexo Exchange using instant swaps or advanced order types (Limit and Trigger orders). Orders incur a tiered processing fee based on transaction volume ($0.99 for orders between the $10 minimum and $100, $1.99 for orders of $100.01–$250, and zero fees for orders above $250). For high-volume trades, Nexo Private clients maintaining balances of $100,000+ can execute large blocks via the OTC desk with tailored pricing and minimal slippage.
  • Coinbase: Simple trades carry consumer spreads and fixed fees. Coinbase Advanced runs an institutional-grade central limit order book with tiered maker/taker fees ranging from 0.00% to 0.60 based on 30-day trailing trading volume.
  • Kraken: Kraken Pro offers low tiered maker/taker fees (ranging from 0.00% to 0.40%), advanced order routing, deep USD book liquidity, and a specialized OTC desk for transactions over $100,000.
  • Aave (v3): Not an exchange. Swaps execute via external decentralized exchange aggregators on EVM networks.
  • Ledn: Offers Ledn Trade for direct conversions between BTC, ETH, Tether Gold (XAU₮), USDC, and USDT using a transparent 0.1%–0.5% pricing spread, without an open order book.

Crypto credit lines: Borrowing without selling

Borrowing against your crypto gives you access to funds without selling your assets, which may avoid the taxable events that come with selling.

  • Nexo: The Nexo Credit Line delivers instant borrowing with no credit checks, no origination fees, and no fixed monthly payment schedule, letting you repay entirely on your own timeline.
    • Competitive rates from 0.9% p.a.: Rates scale with your Wealth Tier and LTV. Maintaining an LTV under 20% unlocks rates of 0.9% (Signature), 1.9% (Elite), or 2.9% (Premier), while LTVs above 20% range from 7.9% to 9.9%. Interest accrues only on the amount you actually withdraw.
    • Accessible liquidity & multi-asset collateral: Borrow anywhere from $50 in stablecoins to $2 million by bank transfer against a single asset or a basket of multiple cryptocurrencies.
    • Collateral flexibility: Swap collateral assets directly inside your Credit Line wallet to manage and rebalance your position during market volatility without having to deposit fresh capital.
    • Repay in crypto or fiat: Settle your balance at any time using fiat currencies, stablecoins, or other supported digital assets.

Important note: Repaying your credit line within 45 days of your last withdrawal incurs interest for the remainder of that 45-day period. If market movement causes your LTV to reach 83.33%, partial automatic repayments are initiated to restore your margin and protect your remaining collateral.

  • Coinbase Borrow: Relaunched onchain via Morpho smart contracts on Base, allowing eligible US clients (excl. NY) to borrow USDC against assets including cbBTC, ETH, and SOL at up to ~75% origination LTV with flexible dynamic or fixed repayment terms.
  • Kraken Flexline: Offers fixed-rate crypto-collateralized term financing (10%–25% APR) alongside spot margin; however, borrowing and margin features for US residents are strictly limited to verified Eligible Contract Participants (ECPs).
  • Aave (v3): Borrowing is governed entirely by autonomous smart contracts across multiple EVM networks. Interest rates fluctuate algorithmically based on pool utilization, and collateral positions falling below their health threshold trigger liquidations with penalties typically between 4% and 10% plus network gas fees.
  • Ledn: Delivers structured, custodial 12-month Bitcoin-backed term loans at 9.25%–11.49% per year, requiring a 50% starting LTV with interest accruing daily and no penalty for early repayment.

Private client services

  • Nexo Private: For clients with a portfolio balance of $100,000 or more. Benefits include a dedicated relationship manager, OTC trading with reduced slippage, tailored interest rates, personalized trading terms, fee and margin reductions, and higher withdrawal limits.
  • Coinbase Prime: Designed for institutional asset managers, hedge funds, and high-net-worth clients, featuring cold-storage custody, multi-venue smart order routing, and prime financing.
  • Kraken VIP and Institutional: Offers high-volume traders and institutions dedicated 1:1 account management, customized API limits, bespoke execution, and a 24/7 OTC trading desk.
  • Aave: No private client services; all interactions are self-custodial and executed directly via smart contracts.
  • Ledn: Ledn Capital and Private Wealth offer bespoke institutional lending programs and tailored Bitcoin-backed credit lines for institutional and high-net-worth clients.
