Worldcoin is a cryptocurrency project that aims to provide global distribution and identity verification through a unique biometric system called World ID. While WLD is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, most transactions happen on the Optimism Layer 2 network, which makes them faster and cheaper. Co-founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern, Worldcoin officially launched in July 2023. The project aims to address two key challenges:
- Proof of personhood: World ID helps distinguish humans from AI online while maintaining user privacy.
- Access to digital assets: By distributing WLD to verified users, the project seeks to expand cryptocurrency adoption.
A core component of Worldcoin's system is the Orb, a biometric device that scans users' irises to issue a World ID. Users who verify their identity can receive periodic WLD distributions. The total WLD supply is capped at 10 billion over a planned 15-year distribution period. The World App serves as a wallet for World ID and supports various cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC.
Worldcoin's ambitious vision is to create a decentralized and inclusive digital economy, allowing individuals around the world to access and interact with cryptocurrencies while verifying their human identity in a secure and privacy-focused manner.
