How is Nexo regulated in Australia

Is Nexo regulated in Australia?

Yes. Nexo is a regulated entity in Australia — incorporated locally, regulated by ASIC as a Credit Representative, a member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA), and registered with AUSTRAC.

Nexo Australia has also lodged an application with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) for an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), which is currently pending determination.

Here's what each of those means in practice.

Registered with AUSTRAC

Nexo Australia is registered with AUSTRAC — the country's anti-money laundering watchdog — as a Virtual Asset Service Provider, under registration number DCE100843695-001. That's the same category of registration other Australian crypto exchanges hold, and it's why Nexo verifies client identity and runs ongoing due diligence. You can check it yourself on the AUSTRAC register.

Regulated by ASIC as a Credit Representative

Nexo Australia is regulated by ASIC as a Credit Representative, which brings its Credit Lines under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act and National Credit Code — the same consumer-credit rules that apply to personal lending across Australia, including a required suitability assessment before any loan is issued. Smart and Standard Credit Line are one regulated product offered as two loan types.

You can check Nexo's Credit Representative and licence status on ASIC's register.

A member of AFCA

Nexo's own support team is the first port of call for any issue, and most things get resolved directly there. Beyond that, Nexo Australia is a member of AFCA, so clients also have access to its dispute resolution service. Membership can be verified on the AFCA register.

Certified on security

Alongside its regulatory registrations, Nexo holds SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, and 27018, CSA STAR Level 1, and Cryptocurrency Security Standard (CCSS) Level 3 — each audited by an external body. Custody is provided by Ledger and Fireblocks.

Built for the Australian market

Nexo Australia is locally incorporated with a team on the ground, gives clients a dedicated AUD account and a choice of AUD or stablecoin payouts, and has been the Official Crypto Partner of the Australian Open. Globally, Nexo has operated since 2018 across more than 200 jurisdictions.

Frequently asked questions

1. What does AUSTRAC registration actually cover?

Anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing — it's what requires Nexo to verify identity and monitor transactions, and it runs alongside, not instead of, ASIC's oversight of Nexo's credit products.

2. What checks does Nexo run before approving a Credit Line?

Every new loan goes through Responsible Lending checks before funds are released — a requirement under the NCCP framework. Assessment happens on both Smart and Standard Credit Lines, and again whenever a credit limit increases. Collateral-backed lending changes what's assessed, but it doesn't remove the assessment.

3. What does Nexo's assessment for a Credit Line actually check?

Every individual Credit Line application is assessed before funds are released — a responsible lending obligation under the NCCP Act that applies to both Smart and Standard Credit Line, aimed at confirming the loan isn't unsuitable for the applicant.

It covers a short set of questions (loan purpose, employment, relationship and dependents, income and household expenses, plus how you intend to meet your repayments if you're applying for Standard Credit Line), then verifies what you've provided, including a credit check.

There's also a market-movement safeguard: because asset prices can shift while you complete the application, a request is declined if your loan-to-value ratio moves by 20% or more in relative terms between requesting the loan and finishing the application — so a 40% LTV request fails at 48%, not 60%. The same assessment reruns if you ask for more credit than your existing limit, and each assessment record is kept for seven years.

4. How long does approval and payout actually take?

Most Credit Line applications are assessed automatically while you're still in the application flow. In some cases, KYC, AML or other security checks mean approval takes up to one business day.

Once approved, stablecoin payouts (USDT or USDC) are typically added within a few minutes, and AUD bank transfers typically reach your account within minutes of approval too.

5. Is Nexo Australia the same company as Nexo globally?

No. Nexo Australia Pty Ltd is a separate, locally incorporated Australian company, which is why Australian clients receive Australian disclosure documents and Australian complaints handling. It runs on the same platform the Nexo group has operated since 2018, serving clients across more than 200 jurisdictions globally, but the Australian products are issued locally and governed by Australian law.

6. Who do I contact if I have an unresolved issue with Nexo Australia?

Nexo's client care team is available 24/7. Most issues are resolved there. If a complaint remains unresolved, AFCA's dispute resolution service is available at no cost.

Nexo Australia Pty Ltd (ACN 667 513 073) is registered with AUSTRAC as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (Reg. No. DCE100843695-001). AUSTRAC registration is for AML/CTF purposes only and is not an endorsement. Nexo Australia does not currently hold an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL). It has lodged an AFSL application with ASIC and, while that application is under consideration, relies on ASIC's class no-action position dated 25 June 2026. That position is not a licence or approval, and ASIC may withdraw it. Nexo Australia is an AFCA member. It is not an authorised deposit-taking institution and is not prudentially regulated by APRA — the Financial Claims Scheme does not apply.
