Optimism (OP) is the native token of the Optimism network — one of the most widely adopted Ethereum layer-2 scaling solutions using optimistic rollup technology. Designed to drastically reduce gas fees and improve transaction speeds, Optimism processes transactions off-chain and then submits batched data to Ethereum for final settlement. This enables significantly greater throughput while inheriting Ethereum’s security model.

Optimistic rollups assume that transactions are valid by default but allow a challenge window during which incorrect data can be disputed using fraud proofs. This model maintains decentralization and trustlessness while offering far superior efficiency compared to layer-1 execution.

The OP token plays a central role in governing the Optimism Collective, a unique dual-governance system that includes the Token House, composed of OP holders, and the Citizens’ House, which represents public goods funding recipients. OP holders can vote on protocol upgrades, ecosystem grants, and treasury allocations.

In addition to governance, OP is used to incentivize builders and users through initiatives like retroactive public goods funding (RPGF) and on-chain ecosystem rewards. The long-term vision includes the Superchain — a network of interoperable chains built on Optimism’s open-source OP Stack.

Optimism is currently priced at $0.32, with a market capitalization of $615,919,013. It reached an all-time high of $4.84 on March 6, 2024. There are 1,944,092,497 OP tokens in circulation, from a total supply of 4,294,967,296, and a maximum supply of 4,294,967,296.
