What is BNB?
BNB, originally introduced as Binance Coin, is Binance's native cryptocurrency. Launched in 2017 through an initial coin offering (ICO), BNB was first launched as a vehicle for improved trading fees on one of the world's largest crypto exchange platforms. Over time, its role has expanded significantly, making it one of the most widely used digital assets.
Initially issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, in April 2019 BNB migrated to Binance’s own blockchain, BNB Chain, which supports faster transactions and lower fees. Binance manages the digital asset's supply and promotes scarcity by burning BNB until the total supply is reduced to within 100 million. By permanently removing portions of the asset from circulation, Binance mitigates inflation. At present, there are 145,887,575.79 BNB in circulation.

What is BNB Smart Chain?
BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is a blockchain network developed by Binance, designed for fast and low-cost decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. It runs parallel to the BNB Beacon Chain, which handles Binance’s governance and staking.
BSC supports Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to deploy Ethereum-based dApps with lower fees. It uses a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus mechanism, combining staking with delegated authority for faster transactions and reduced costs compared to Ethereum.
Is BEP-20 the same as BNB?
No, but they are related. BEP-20 is a token standard on BNB Smart Chain, similar to Ethereum’s ERC-20 standard. Digital assets following the BEP-20 standard run on BSC but are separate from BNB itself.
