What is Uniswap?

Uniswap is a decentralised exchange: an app that lets people swap digital assets directly from their own wallets, without a company holding their funds or matching orders. It was created by Hayden Adams and launched on Ethereum in November 2018. Instead of an order book, Uniswap uses pools of tokens supplied by its users, and prices are set automatically by the balance in each pool. In May 2025, it became the first decentralised exchange to pass US$3 trillion in all-time trading volume. UNI is Uniswap's governance token. It was introduced in 2020 and distributed to the protocol's early users, and holders vote on how Uniswap is run. In December 2025, UNI holders approved a proposal to switch on protocol fees and use them to buy back and permanently remove UNI from circulation. 100 million UNI were burned as part of that change. There will only ever be 1 billion UNI.

What moves the price of Uniswap?

Like any digital asset, {{ market.name }'s price is set by supply and demand on exchanges around the world. A few things tend to affect it:

Trading activity on Uniswap

More trading means more protocol fees, which now fund UNI buybacks and burns.

Governance decisions

UNI holders vote on changes such as fees, and those decisions can change how people view the token.

Decentralised finance and Ethereum

UNI often moves with overall DeFi activity and the price of Ethereum, where most of Uniswap's activity happens.

Regulation

Rules for decentralised exchanges and DeFi in the US and elsewhere.
Uniswap's price can move quickly in either direction. Consider buying only an amount you'd be comfortable holding through those ups and downs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I buy Uniswap with Australian dollars?

Add AUD to your Nexo account using PayID, a bank transfer, or а card. Then go to the Exchange tab, choose Uniswap, enter the amount, and confirm.

What is the UNI token used for?

UNI lets holders vote on how the Uniswap protocol is run, including its fees. Since December 2025, protocol fees have been used to buy back and burn UNI, which links the token to how much the protocol is used.

Can I buy UNI without using the Uniswap app?

Yes. You can buy UNI with Australian dollars on Nexo and hold it in your Nexo account. You don't need a separate crypto wallet or to use Uniswap itself.

How long does a PayID or Osko transfer take?

Osko transfers between participating banks usually arrive in near real time. A standard BECS transfer typically takes 1–3 business days.

Can I buy Uniswap with a credit card in Australia?

Yes. You can use a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card, or a card saved in Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Is there a minimum amount of Uniswap I can buy?

Yes. The minimum purchase is the equivalent of US$10, so you can start with a small amount and buy a fraction of Uniswap. Some funding methods, such as card payments, may have their own minimums, which you'll see in the app before you confirm.

Do I pay tax on Uniswap in Australia?

Capital gains tax can apply when you sell, swap, or spend Uniswap, depending on your circumstances. You can import your Nexo history into Koinly to help prepare your tax report, and a registered tax agent can advise on your situation.
