Shiba Inu (SHIB) was launched in 2020 by an anonymous creator under the pseudonym Ryoshi as a decentralized, community-driven experiment. Initially starting out as a meme-inspired digital asset, SHIB has quickly become one of the most recognizable cryptocurrencies through the efforts of a very passionate and vocal community.
As an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, SHIB doesn’t require mining and is easy to trade and integrate into DeFi applications. Extending its range from being just a single meme-inspired digital asset, it has built a full ecosystem, including ShibaSwap, its decentralized exchange. In 2023, the launch of Shibarium, a Layer 2 blockchain, made SHIB transactions faster and cheaper, reinforcing its shift from hype to real utility.
SHIB’s defining moment came in 2021 when around 50% of its total supply was sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. He burned most of it and donated the rest to India’s COVID-19 relief, making headlines and slashing supply. Today, SHIB is accepted by merchants like Newegg, proving its adoption extends beyond pure speculation.
Despite market swings, SHIB remains one of the most widely held ERC-20 tokens, backed by an active community and continuous development. What started as a joke has evolved into a growing crypto ecosystem.
